My name is Keith Smith, and I thank you for your interest in my work. This may sound strange but I did not set out to be a photographer. Back in 1993 I made the decision to try new things and “live outside the box”. I threw myself into a number of activities: Hiking, Kayaking, Skydiving, Scuba Diving, Rock Climbing, Canyoneering, Kite Surfing, Martial Arts, etc. I met some great people along the way and was having so much fun that I felt like I needed to document it for myself somehow. So I started with a video camera and discovered that I could use it as tool for traveling. I quickly landed my first job shooting footage for a kayak expedition company. However, I didn’t really like the editing process so I switched to photography and found myself planning entire adventures around obtaining the pictures I visualized in my mind. You won’t find any of those pictures here because they don’t exist. Mother Nature always had something else in mind for me but I realized that it didn’t really matter. It taught me what matters is the experience and the friends I’ve met along the way not the 1/500th of a second when the shutter opens and closes. |
